The primary active ingredient in sunless tanning products is DHA (Dihydroxyacetone). DHA is a colorless sugar that interacts with the proteins and amino acids in the outermost layer of the skin (stratum corneum of the epidermis), causing a non-enzymatic browning of the skin. This is called the "Maillard reaction". Several factors influence this reaction, such as skin type, thickness, ph, medication, hormone levels, and dryness of the skin. In addition, the total composition and quality of ingredients greatly influence consistency, hue, intensity of color, and substantivity of the final tan.
IS SPRAY TANNING SAFE?
Yes! DHA has been FDA approved and used in cosmetic products for over 30 years. DHA based sunless tanning is recommended by the Skin Cancer Organization, The American Cancer Society, American Academy of Dermatology, and the American Medical Association.
WHY CHOOSE A CUSTOM SPRAY TAN OVER A BOOTH SPRAY TAN?
A custom spray tan applied by a professional tanning specialist allows for precise, even application. Special care is taken for the hands, feet, elbows, and other areas that tend to absorb more color. Booth sprays are impersonal, machine operated, and tend to over-saturate your body, often leaving you with an uneven and unnatural looking tan.
WHAT DO I WEAR DURING MY TANNING SESSION?
Attire for women is based on individual comfort level and whether or not you want tan lines. You may wear an old swimsuit, bra and panties, or your birthday suit…. the choice is yours! However, men and clients under the age of 18 are required to wear bottoms. Be assured that we are professionals and will make every effort to accommodate your needs and make you as comfortable as possible.
HOW LONG WILL MY TANNING SESSION TAKE?
A full body tanning session takes approximately 15 minutes…. attention to every detail is made to ensure you have an even, flawless application. Plan for additional time at your first visit to allow for the initial consultation and preparation.
HOW LONG DOES THE TAN LAST?
A spray tan lasts an average of 5-10 days. Your tan will fade as your skin naturally exfoliates. The face, hands, and feet will fade quicker than the body. The quality and duration is greatly dependent on proper before and after care, skin type, and individual activities. For a beautiful, flawless, long-lasting tan it is imperative to follow our tanning tips.
HOW DO I PROTECT AND MAINTAIN MY SPRAY TAN?
Avoid skin products and activities that accelerate exfoliation. Such products are alpha hydroxy acids, skin renewing and lightening products, Retin-A, acne products, bar soaps/deodorant soaps, oils, alcohol based products, and perfumes. Activities that can fade or cause poor fading of your tan are long/hot showers or baths, excessive sweating/rubbing/scratching, hair removal procedures, swimming, and hot tubs.
DO I STILL NEED TO WEAR SUNSCREEN?
Yes! A spray tan does not provide UV protection, therefore you should apply sunscreen accordingly. Whether you have a sunless or UV tan, your skin is still vulnerable to the sun’s damaging rays. We recommend applying sunscreen to exposed areas year round!
WILL SWIMMING FADE MY TAN?
Water is a natural exfoliant and can shorten the life of your tan. Limit time in chlorinated water to 10-15 minute increments. You can minimize fading by liberally and frequently applying a good quality waterproof sunscreen. Hot tubs are not recommended as they are extremely harsh on spray tans.
IS SPRAY TANNING SAFE FOR PREGNANT OR NURSING MOTHERS?
If you are pregnant or nursing we advise you to consult with your physician prior to scheduling a spray tan. We have tanned many satisfied clients throughout their pregnancies - with their obstetrician's approval. We believe, and it is generally accepted, that properly applied spray tans done in an environment with adequate ventilation is safe for mothers-to-be. The final decision about whether sunless tanning is appropriate during your pregnancy should be made by you and your physician.
IS SPRAY TANNING FOR ALL AGES?
Spray tanning is effective for all skin types, from the fairest of fair to deep dark skin tones.
